Dan's Unhappiness

Sumner Redstone, chief honcho at CBS parent company Viacom, yes terday told a convocation of senior corporate executives that he is "very concerned" about Dan Rather's now-infamous "60 Minutes" report on President Bush's military record.

As well he should be. The reputation of what was once America's premier television news network was shredded by Rather's credulous embrace of documents that most charitably can be termed amateurish forgeries.

The whole affair is now the subject of an independent probe — and Rather is hot under the collar.

Not with the idea of an investigation, or so he says. (Though given everything that's already come out about the way he and producer Mary Mapes handled the National Guard story, he can't be looking forward to any genuine probe.)

No, Rather doesn't like the fact that one of those named to look into his conduct is — gasp! — a Republican.

And not just any Republican, but one who in the past worked for two presidents — Richard Nixon and the first George Bush — with whom Rather had notorious public clashes.
