Talking the Talk

Hillary Clinton is talking the talk, but can she walk the walk?:

"I always take time to worship God in as evangelical a way as is feasible, given time and location constraints. As you know, I consider myself an evangelical Christian, really a Christian conservative, if you want to know the truth..."

I am not trying to take Senator Clinton's faith walk away from her, but I remind her of a biblical saying: By their fruit you will know them.

Hillary's public comments suggest another orientation: (soaurce: On the Issues)

On abortion, she has said and done:

Must safeguard constitutional rights, including choice. (Oct 2000)
Late term abortion only if life or health are at risk. (Oct 2000)
Remain vigilant on a woman’s right to chose. (Jan 2000)
Keep abortion safe, legal and rare. (Jan 1999)
Being pro-choice is not being pro-abortion. (Jan 1999)
Reach out to teens to reduce teen sex problems. (Jan 1999)
Supports parental notice & family planning. (Feb 1997)
Voted NO on criminal penalty for harming unborn fetus during other crime. (Mar 2004)
Voted NO on banning partial birth abortions except for maternal life. (Mar 2003)
Recommended by EMILY's List of pro-choice women. (Apr 2001)
Rated 100% by NARAL, indicating a pro-choice voting record. (Dec 2003)
Expand embryonic stem cell research. (Jun 2004)

Hillary, do you think we can't tell the difference?

Comments:
There is a lot more to being Christian than just being pro-life.

Many of us on the Christian left find the right's positions quite opposed to what we see as Christian values but we do not go around calling the Christian right heathens. Putting the abortion issue to the side (there are pro-life/pro-choice people on the right and left), there are many issues we feel are being overlooked. Since Jesus did not condemn homosexuality and since there are many parts of the old testament that we no longer condemn people for (eg. eating shell fish) or condone (eg. selling slaves) we choose to follow the path of tolerance that Jesus taught and we depart with teaching hate. Where is the Christian right when it comes to the 12 million people living below the poverty level? We on the Christian left are for the protection of the family by ensuring living wages over tax cuts, taking care of the ill over tax cuts, feeding the children over tax cuts, etc. If I have to choose between a candidate who will pass health care reform but would close loop holes for buying guns at gun shows and a candidate who is against health care but pro-gun, which one is more Christian? Caring for your neighbor and praying for peace is not exactly un-Christian.

Hillary called herself a Conservative evangelical, and I was pointing out that according to her voting record there is a difference.

Now personally, I am not what some people would call an evangelical Christian. I am a conservative Catholic who believes in the teaching of the Church.

But this is not what I was talking about. Does she walk the walk? And the answer is no, Hillary, who is a complex woman with strong opinions, not all bad, not all good like most of us, does not walk the conservative evangelical walk.

I will not comment about her sincerity in her walk with God. Not my place to judge what's in her heart.

Just a note: this story is a hoax. It was taken from a satire peice at the Natinal Review.
